Topological Nonrealization Results via the Goodwillie Tower Approach to Iterated Loopspace Homology

چکیده
We prove a strengthened version of a theorem of Lionel Schwartz that says that certain modules over the Steenrod algebra cannot be the mod 2 cohomology of a space. What is most interesting is our method, which replaces his iterated use of the Eilenberg–Moore spectral sequence by a single use of the spectral sequence converging to H(ΩX;Z/2) obtained from the Goodwillie tower for ΣΩX. Much of the paper develops basic properties of this spectral sequence.

The Goodwillie tower and the EHP sequence
We study the interaction between the EHP sequence and the Goodwillie tower of the identity evaluated at spheres at the prime 2. Both give rise to spectral sequences (the EHP spectral sequence and the Goodwillie spectral sequence, respectively) which compute the unstable homotopy groups of spheres. We relate the Goodwillie filtration to the P map, and the Goodwillie differentials to the H map. F...
متن کاملAlgebraic Goodwillie Calculus and a Cotriple Model for the Remainder
We define an “algebraic” version of the Goodwillie tower, P alg n F (X), that depends only on the behavior of F on coproducts of X . When F is a functor to connected spaces or grouplike H-spaces, the functor P alg n F is the base of a fibration |⊥ F | → F → P alg n F, whose fiber is the simplicial space associated to a cotriple ⊥ built from the (n + 1) cross effect of the functor F . When the c...
متن کاملOn the Taylor Tower of Relative K-theory
Tom Goodwillie conjectured that one could define a Hochschild homology theory for rings where the tensors are replaced by ‘tensors’ over the sphere spectrum, and get an invariant which would agree with the stable K-theory of the ring. This theory, now known as topological Hochschild homology and denoted by THH, was defined by Marcel Bökstedt [B], and in [D], Bjørn Dundas proved that it agrees, ...

Speaker: Gregory Arone (Virginia) Title: Part 1: operads, modules and the chain rule Abstract: Let F be a homotopy functor between the categories of pointed topological spaces or spectra. By the work of Goodwillie, the derivatives of F form a symmetric sequence of spectra ∂∗F . This symmetric sequence determines the homogeneous layers in the Taylor tower of F , but not the extensions in the tow...
متن کاملFiltered Topological Cyclic Homology and relative K -theory of nilpotent ideals
In this paper certain filtrations of topological Hochschild homology and topological cyclic homology are examined. As an example we show how the filtration with respect to a nilpotent ideal gives rise to an analog of a theorem of Goodwillie saying that rationally relative K -theory and relative cyclic homology agree. Our variation says that the p-torsion parts agree in a range of degrees. We us...
